Visiting the Puerto Rican set of Losers
by admin on Apr.08, 2010, under Film, SCI FI Work
On a hot, balmy day in Puerto Rico, the smell of sweat, metal and ammunition permeate the summer air. Today The Losers are being lined up for their execution, but we have a hunch they might make it out of the sticky situation.
We’re on the set of the new comic-book-based action movie, which stars Watchmen’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Avatar’s Zoe Saldana. The Losers is based on a comic by DC’s Vertigo, the story of an elite special forces team targeted as part of an evil plan by one-named villain Max (Jason Patric). Betrayed and thought dead, the ragtag group of colorful characters teams up with a rogue operative named Aisha (Saldana) and sets out to enact their revenge.

Get a Case of the Crazies

The Crazies hits screens this Friday, February 26th, and I’m hopeful that this one might turn out to be a pretty good jumpy scare kind of horror thriller.
To offer a little background, the story takes place in the fictional small town of Ogden Marsh, Iowa. A disease starts to take hold of the residents causing them to go mad and hunt down their friends and family. Directed by Breck Eisner (Sahara), Crazies is a remake of a little known 1973 low, low budget George Romero flick.
I spent some time on the set down in rural George earlier last year and wrote reports for Dark Horizons, Bloody-Disgusting and SCI FI Channel. Last week I spoke to castmembers Timothy Olyphant, Danielle Panabaker and Radha Mitchell as well as director Breck Eisner about the release on behalf of Bloody D and SCI FI.
All in all, I’ve got a decent feeling about this one. It could very easily be nothing more than schlocky horror crap, I admit, but I think this one has a chance of rising to the occasion a bit and being something a little more. Bloody D ran a pretty cool clip recently in which Sheriff Dutton (Olyphant) has a battle with an autopsy saw. Check out my various Crazies coverage below as well as the aforementioned autopsy saw clip.

Exclusive: Panabaker on Carpenter’s The Ward

I’ve got an exclusive story over on SCI FI Wire today about John Carpenter’s long-awaited return, The Ward. It’s the director’s first feature since the underwhelming 2001 Ice Cube flick, Ghosts of Mars.
Co-star Danielle Panabaker, who portrays a patient in an insane asylum in the movie, offers some details on the movie and her role. Check out the full story below at SCI FI Wire:
SCI FI Wire Stories on Brood Remake and Flash Gordon
by admin on Feb.19, 2010, under Film, SCI FI Work
Today I’ve got two news stories up on SCI FI Wire from an interview yesterday with director Breck Eisner (Sahara). Eisner’s The Crazies hits screens next Friday, February 26th. I did a set visit on Crazies down in rural Georgia back in early 2009, which you can check out right here. Below Eisner talks about two potential high profile follow-up projects, a remake of Cronenberg’s The Brood and a re-imagining of comic pulp hero Flash Gordon.
Crazies Set Visit

For any passerby unaware of the film shoot currently in progress, the scene could appear to be the first sign of the apocalypse. Thankfully, most of the town is not only aware of the big Hollywood production, but also joining in the fun as extras in tonight’s extravagant scene from The Crazies, a remake of the 1973 George Romero film of the same name. Directed by Breck Eisner (Sahara), tonight’s scene features hundreds of extras, the most logistically complicated portion of the entire shoot.
We compare Lycans with the best werewolf transformations of all time
by admin on Jan.09, 2009, under Film, Film Features, SCI FI Work
Makers of the third movie in the Underworld series, Rise of the Lycans—hitting theaters Jan. 23—say it will feature more werewolves onscreen simultaneously than any previous lycanthrope movie and that it pushes the envelope in the visual effects depicting the transformation of man to wolf.
But how does it stack up against all the werewolf movies of the past? We’ll look at that in a moment, but first, a quick look at Lycans.
During a brutal battle sequence screened for press, an army of Lycans storms the vampire castle. Hundreds of werewolves tear across the open landscape, roaring and foaming at the mouth as arrows fired from the castle rip through an unfortunate beast here and there. The coolest part is a Lycan transforming in mid-run, with his pants flying off behind him. Take that, Incredible Hulk!
The best sci-fi trailers of 2008 – for movies that totally sucked.
by admin on Jan.05, 2009, under Film, Film Features, SCI FI Work
We know that the best part of going to the movies is seeing the trailers, those dazzling advertisements designed to sell you on a movie in 90 seconds. Heck, studios have caught on: You can even see trailers for trailers these days.
We also know that trailers are sometimes more entertaining than the movie you actually paid to see. And, as we have discovered to our dismay, the trailers are often better than the very movies they’re trying to sell.
A tightly edited, flashy selection of a movie’s best moments–accompanied by an edgy, pulse-pounding score–can mask a movie’s true horribleness. Following are my picks for the best 2008 trailers for movies that sucked.
